Relay For Life in Second Life has now had several years of activity, each year breaking the record set by the last. Here is the schedule of themed laps as they will happen throughout the weekend. I went to the sims for a bit of a preview yesterday and the builds, as usual, are stunning!

Two weeks to go until MMMv2.0 - the Montreal Musicians' Meetup, which will be a wonderful time for all attendees, in both physical and virtual venues. Mixed reality, here we come!

When I first joined Second Life, I was impressed. Not by the stability of the platform, but by the humour that Linden Labs displayed - when the grid was down, there was an image on the website of the "monkeys banging on the grid." Being able to laugh certainly increased my patience and tolerance, and helped me forgive those frequent outages (every Wednesday morning, as I recall.)

Not long afterwards, there was this story: 'Second Life' Sends Blogger Un-Cease-And-Desist Letter - the actual letter is published on The Trademark Blog - I thought, "wow, this is a pretty neat way to handle things." A line from that letter reads "Linden Lab is well-known for having strict hiring standards, including a requirement for having a sense of humor, from which our lawyers receive no exception. "

Where has that sense of humour gone lately? Has anyone witnessed it recently? Does anyone else remember these things?

Just me, being pensive .... no answers, not even real or relevant questions ....

More question the next morning - what does this massive layoff situation do for the morale of the remaining staff?

All that Glitters

When I first bought that land up on the Ridge in Nitida, it was the hill that I was after - the land I already had was on the Euclidia side down that hill a ways, and ad parcels were still rampant on mainland - the major motivation for that purchase, when I discovered the entire Ridge was for sale, was to avoid having a line of highly prominent and visible advertisements spoiling the landscape above my little place. Walking along the crest of that hill for the first time, I came upon the "saddle" where it dips a bit - having joined SL for the music, and without having any previous intentions of actually running a live music venue - I felt that spot seemed to be crying for a venue. This was all before windlight, but I noticed the sky, and the sun, the altitude of the clouds, and their relation to the hill - some of those things I have no control over and that seem to add to the ambience of the place - and began to dream - or rather, free-associate, beginning with some questions.

What does the name mean?

The sim was named Nitida, and while trying to think of what else might make the Ridge special, I wondered what that might mean, if anything, to anyone. Being mainland, there are a lot of things there is no control over, including the name of the sim. It turns out that "nitida" is Latin for "shining," "bright," or "glittering" (Latin dictionary: http://www.latin-dictionary.org/nitida )

Why would someone name a piece of land "Nitida"?

When people come across new land in the real world, why do they give it the names that they do? Some name a new place they settle in after the old one they just left for nostalgic reasons. Some dub a new place they come across after something they see in the new place.

So what might be found in a hill that would make someone name it "shining" or

"glittering" ?

By now I guess you can see where my thinking went, when I researched photos of gold ore to discover that it's frequently found with quartz (so is iron pyrite) and took textures of granite and photos of quartz and pyrite that I found and blended them all into the rock textures that I ended up using all over the hill. There is more quartz and granite than anything, but if you look closely you'll see the glittering specks. Which ones are gold and which ones fool's gold? Hard to tell ;-)

Since adding the rocks, there have been trees and grasses and flowers, a couple of other "venues" and Twome's original tower that came with the ridge and that has a permanent place here. And there are seasons - but the pond in the saddle of the hill, *that* must be volcanically heated, since the area immediately around it is always green :-). As well as gold - that pond was my first venue tip jar, and still functions as such for those who remember. On the pebbles at the bottom of the pond you will see the coins, including some glittery gold, that have been tossed into the water.

The real treasure in this place is the music and the comradeship that happens here, during and outside of actual events - that goes without saying, but that and the magnetism that draws people here from time to time are not what prompted this reminiscence.

What prompted it is turtly fun. I wasn't even thinking about the Ridge when I hatched, as I do now and again, way more Petable Turtle eggs than I should, sometimes for obscure reasons that I can't remember, other times because they have special characteristics that I know I'll want to keep. I wasn't thinking about the Ridge when I named a glowshine "Foolsgold" - not just for his colour but for the foolishness of hatching yet another turtle. I wasn't thinking about the Ridge when I realized that there was a half dozen metallic gold eggs in my attractor, all shinies, whose father was Foolsgold and whose mother was a turtle I'd somehow missed naming - so I named her "Mother Lode."

Pretty as these eggs are, I wasn't thinking about the Ridge when I decided to trade in a lot of my existing turtles, and since Foolsgold and Mother Lode don't really fit into my breeding programme, they were slated to get traded too, after a period in the sale pond.

Well, they're not going in the sale pond. They're not getting traded. I finally realized where they belong. They, and the glittering nuggets they produce, are now a part of the Ridge magic, as they have joined a couple of 7Seas Koi in the pond in the saddle on the hill.

It's fun that the first 2 eggs laid in their new home were not only shines, but the first glowshines they have produced :-)

SL Relay for Life 2009 - Challenge to my friends

This year's theme is "One World, One Hope"

***We beat our goal of a quarter million US dollars - I don't know the final figures yet. There is still money trickling in, even the Relay special Linden bear will still be available until the end of the month. It comes in Large, Medium, and Small.

Here is the map about a third of the way through the first lap, the survivors' & caregivers' lap.
Who hasn't been touched, directly or indirectly, by cancer?
I don't often solicit from my friends, however, for those of you who would like
to support me in my goal of helping out in some small way - I'm challenging myself to not only support this cause but let others know about it - it's the only charity I
am aware of in Second Life where the organization itself has a strong presence inworld and ensures that donations go through officially-sanctioned kiosks, that spreads the moneys taken in from inworld efforts around the globe even though the organization itself is in the USA. This even though it is a US-based organization.
I had already lost my mother, several friends, and even pets to this disease,
and know others who are currently fighting. During the 2008 Relay in SL, I
started running the RFL track seriously after speaking with a friend who was
battling cancer at the time and dropped in to visit. She has since lost her
battle. I was angry at the disease then, and am angrier now. So I will cheer
on the survivors and caregivers in their first lap, and then run my avatar from
start to finish, as long and far as I can.
If you wish to support me in this, drop by the Relay SIMS during the event this
coming weekend. Explore the amazing builds in the sims, play the games, listen
to the music, light the luminaria, drop Lindens in the kiosks if you can. I will be doing the same, and running the track as well.

And if you'd like to, help me know that I'm not running just out of anger - if
there's a website posting during the event of runners and their placement, I'll
keep track of how I'm doing. If I finish in the top 100, add a little extra to
your donation. Perhaps a multiple of the difference between the 101st place and
my actual finish. Something like:

Montreal Musician's Meetup

July 24/25 on the west end of Montreal.

I've set up a few information pages with maps and other useful items, but for those interested in coming to the rl event, registration forms and up-to-date notifications are distributed through a Subscribe-o-Matic group that has been set up for anyone who would like to be kept updated. You're welcome to join this group whether you plan to come or not; it will not take up one of your SL group slots.

You can find subscription kiosks inworld at Mocha Fey in Nitida , on the Nitida Ridge stage, at HIPS, and at some of the concerts given by attending musicians.

An explosive time

Take a few bricks and boards, shngles, panes of glass, beams, and a door - put them together painstakingly for a perfect little 5500-prim house - and what do people plan to do with it? Well, if they're a little crazy like me, Crap Mariner, Rush Gastel and SeanMcPherson Senior ...

After a while it slowed down and stopped in a state of suspended animation - until Rush got the idea to pick up what was already on the ground - then the others started coming down.

The MusiCom

Toby and I have been working on a project together, called the MusiCom. I've been using it on the Ridge for a few weeks, and we've tested and tweaked it all along until we found it ready to demo to the world. I took it to the Show & Tell at Lummerland today, run by Barney Boomslang and Florenze Kerensky, and was delighted and surprised to snag 4th place with it - among some stunning builds our little tool did rather well. We're finding it quite useful; hopefully others will as well.

MusiCom - Message display and stream manager

Inspired by an idea from Montian Gilruth, Bree Birke and I have designed and built MusiCom; a message display and stream management device for venue hosts and performers.
When a live music concert is put on in SL, there is a familar sequence of events where the performer seeks confirmation from the audience that they can be heard. If the audience is very talkative or using chat gestures in open chat, or if several IMs are coming in at once, messages may get missed. This is where the MusiCom comes in. Its primary function is to communicate with the musician, and provide necessary information in an easy-to-see and prominent manner.

There are three components to the MusiCom:

The main communications unit is intended to sit on the stage like a stage monitor. It has a pair of textured surfaces that face the musician. It is accompanied by a RELAY unit which is required for stream setting functions. Copies of the RELAY can be used in the case of multi-sim/parcel venues. There is also an optional musician HUD.

The MusiCom menu provides options to set streams or radio stations (stored on notecards). Appropriate messages are displayed on the MusiCom indicating to the performer whether the stream is "Off", "Stand By" (telling the performer to start streaming) or "On Air" informing the performer that they can be heard. There is also an option to display additional important messages to the performer, e.g. "Too Quiet", "Too Loud", "Some Distortion", "No Sound", "Check IM" etc.

The MusiCom can be purchased for 998L$ at our new shop TBC, near The Comfort Zone.

Actually, nobody was feeling down - just hadn't been inworld a whole lot for a few days because I had a late visit from Santa over the last part of the holiday.

It's always nice when your Second Life friends turn out to be pretty much the same in real life - or better :-)

Just a short post to say what wonderful fun yesterday was and how much in the way of good feeling was shared - and what's a good party without a bad griefing ?!

While that was definitelty annoying and it took me a few moments to stop the griefer objects which were replicating, it didn't sour thing for long and the griefer didn't leave much of a mark. As a matter of fact, because of the timing, just as Djai and Toby were about to stream, for the very first time, the mp3 recording of Christmas All Year Through, that people had been waiting for - one remote listener commented that hearing comments about the griefing on the stream added to the suspense in an almost good way - at least from a remote pov. So whatever the motivation behind this was - let the griefer consider that it backfired ;-) .

Thanks to all those who helped by id'ing the owner of the objects while I was returning them, and particularly the calm solid advice to the crowd while I was too busy turning stuff off on the land tab and returning replicating objects.

We did it - it's done (but maybe not - watch this space) ... in the meantime - kudos go out to everyone involved, among others, Montian Gilruth who was the official "listener" to all the voices and turned the chaos into a stream so that the audience would have a seamless time of it.

Gotta love those listening antennae ;-).

The multi-talented Santa Kwassman was an amazing Scrooge - and on top of it made his own costume to wear for the role.
The set created by Paddy Wright - I've mentioned that before but I simply cannot get enough in one eyeful of this - perfect for the reading, and the ghostlike procession of images evocative of the scenes that are so familiar to us from this classic tale. Couldn't make up my mind which shot of this to choose so here are a bunch.

The people who came to listen - thank-you! If you enjoyed this a tenth as much as we did, I'm happy :-)

Two cast members not mentioned earlier - Jane and Sidhe - who joined us for the performance and sounded great!

Finally, without our "guardian angel" Aaack we would have surely experienced some interruptions and questions from arriving audience members - he kept everything flowing smoothly.

I'm echoing Crap here 'cause he beat me to it - look for a reading of "A Christmas Carol" Saturday the 13th 10 am at Cinnamon Court on Teal Island.

Kae Sura adapted the piece for our reading and Paddy Wright built a wonderful set - both perfectly suited to the purpose.

Montian Gilruth is adding his technical expertise to gather the voice contributions and redirect them via a stream to be heard in sl. Some of the other (unusual) suspects ... er, cast members ... include Gillian Carthage and Carter Liveoak who own the venue, Crap Mariner, Oshkosh, Morton DaCosta, Katy Ballyhoo, and myself:

Something I don't do often enough - RL work has been extremely intense lately so on a break I'm finding this pleasant - grab a horse, and ride a Linden Road. I've chosen the outermost road that circles the Atoll continent, which is the continent where my own Nitida Ridge is found.

I have to curb the shopping monster in me though - I've found some pretty nice shops along the way!

Think Monti should add "Stir It Up" to his set list? Oh, yeah, what set list? Anyway, things were heating up and Horacios (Shamanes) stayed to help stir the stew!

Little Blue Island's speedbuild event

I just came from the Sandbox at Little Blue Island where every Friday at 1pm there is a friendly speedbuild competition. The theme could be chosen today, from any of 4 nursery rhymes. I was particularly taken, by this take on Humpty Dumpty, done by Aaack Straaf

The Mists of Nitida - new space preview

This one's not intended for anything but a place to come and dance - anytime - and it's proving great fun in the building; found a couple of very neat water effects to add as well. Though the whole thing is still raw and unfinished, here's a preview pic.

Every Saturday morning, there's a twinge of regret that I can't be in two places at once, listening - while Kourosh is on a short hiatus I'm taking advantage and heading to Elfay Pinkdot's Coffee & Pajamas show at Sunset Jazz Club - I'm not normally into DJ shows in sl (nothing against them - just personal preference for music performed live) - but Elfay's different :-)

This week has a 6 Degrees of Cassandra Wilson theme - the music is just grand.

Mimi joins Hathead Rickenbacker & Maximillion Kleene

... for her last gig in Canada yesterday, at Hathead's in Toronto, before going back home. They streamed live with video to an appreciative crowd at Hathead's Terrace on Hathead II

It was great fun to see their smiling rl faces, as well as that of Blue, Paradise Tennant's wonderdog, who occasionally chimed in with his own harmonies.

SL/RL merger

Great fun - 3 SL musicians who had never met, much less played together, sitting in my livingroom last night and jamming for more than a couple of hours. It wasn't perfect - the only setup that worked was to use a single mic, but to these ears the talented trio of Mimi, Chronic & Snow sounded really good - and their skills came through on the stream too ... we had such a good time that not one of us remembered I'd left a camera in easy reach - there are no pics :-( . Fortunately the sound of music and laughter, and the smiling faces are burned into my memory - this will always be a highlight of this year.

Impromptu marathon

I came home Friday night after spending some time helping a family member move, doing a little shopping, mundane RL stuff - to see a notice in my email that Monti & Mimi were doing an impromptu set in Mocha Fey. I popped right over there and it was apparent they'd been going on for 2 hours or more - and they continued on - until they'd played a total of nearly 5 hours! A cozy small crowd was there, and it looked like all were enjoying themselves.

From the sound of it, Mimi & Monti were enjoying themselves the most :)

All this after doing a scheduled special on the Ridge that packed both sims 2 nights before - where they played an hour over the scheduled 1-1/2 hours as well - life is good :)

RFL Wrapup

There isn't much I can say about the RFL wrapup that hasn't been said on the SL Relay for Life website, except that Saturday's presentations were moving, and inspiring. However, I spotted this today in the News - which gives a much better glimpse of the event that my few snapshots could.

When I think of these amazing builds that were put together on 35 sims in a short time, the track that we walked and ran, the avatars (each with a human being behind him/her/it) that lined the track and cheered the survivors, caregivers, runners and walkers on, the incredibly inspiring music choices played by T1 Radio as well as the uncountable live music events - I am still astounded and humbled. What potential there is in us all!

Mimi Carpenter

Yesterday, Mimi and her family stopped by on their way between larger cities - we went to lunch and walked around for a bit. Flash Geiger, who is responsible for my presence in SL, came along - he is a fount of local (and not-so-local) information. On the way from my place to downtown we experienced a small (very small) synchronicity event - I'll leave it to Dolmere to recount what I shared with him :-)

As for the inevitable "what's she really like?" questions - there were no surprises :-) - RL Mimi is very much the same sweet person that she is in SL.

Head to HIPS of course :-) - genial company, pretty surroundings, fantastic music from Grace McDunnough, then Frogg & Jaycatt - the end of a perfect SL day. RL? Oh yeah, I did fit in some grocery shopping and cleaning - what's more fun? ;-)

We had a grand time doing a soundcheck at Mocha Fey yesterday morning, and then the stream got passed to Monti who has a new song (something else to watch for); then Mr. Lancaster grabbed it and added the Toby Touch - it was all very very sweet. SL Relay for Life - a Catalyst

Well, Relay for Life's annual event in SL was over yesterday and everyone's talking about how it made history - don't take "everyone"s word for it - have a look at the numbers at the Relay for Life of Second Life website - virtual people (how "unreal" they are is arguable) in a virtual world, generating virtual funds that can be turned into very real money for a very real cause. Pics to come :-)

It is the importance of this event that got me finally started with something meaningful in this blog which I opened just to look at the technology from a user end; my future postings may well remain sketchy.

Well, it did say “Hello, World” - I’m not a blogger though I have enjoyed reviewing websites in StumbleUpon in the past - which was SU’s original purpose. Finding myself posting more and more Second Life stuff there that wasn’t quite in the spirit of website review, am thinking of giving this a chance - we’ll see how this goes.

Another reason for doing this is to test Adobe Contribute CS3’s blog editing capabilities. This sentence edited with Contribute - seems to be working nicely!

A third reason is to play with the BlogHud that can be used from within SecondLife.
